No. Never made it that far. If I remember the story right he somehow got the plane over on it's back....whether it was a brake that locked up or ran off the runway into soft ground or something. It also had a spinner on it, IIRC.

He sold it to the CAF....not sure if it was directly to the CAF, or to Ed Messick through the CAF. JR used the money from the sale to start working on his P-63.

This show is always right in my backyard (well close to Santa Barbara anyway) This is Camarillo CA. Looks recent as well as the CAF PBJ looks ready to go down there. Another great show every year as the POF and CAF SoCal wing do it right.

General/Colonel Reg Urschler. USAF/CAF retired. He was a SAC Wing commander with the 55SRW. He flew a few very secret (at the time) RB-47 missions over the USSR.

Randy, I guess we have been at the same airshow at least once. I did not remember any L-birds in the air, Lefty had just taken off, followed by Scatterbrain Kid II. I had been helping the 38 crew cleaning and reinstalling plugs in the right engine and installing the cowls after a ground run.

Hi Matt - I bet we have rubbed shoulders at least once at air shows, too. I remember the fevered work going on to clean the plugs on the P-38 that day at BKD. It may not have been a real L-Bird but my memory is that a Stinson or other high-wing bird radioed the first sighting, while I was still just beginning to search. I was trying to cool down in Nelson's hangar when the CAF P-38 took off popping and smoking and then sank out of sight after a too short flight. I got the Zero airborne as soon as I could but the other light planes were more effective in the search. I was fortunate to get into the last part of the old CAF, especially as a fighter pilot. Not always easy, as you may know. All the best.
