By the way Tom Riley had very little to do with the repairs. You can see the dollar signs in his eyes. It was the people of Beaver County and Co. Airport director Dan Donetala

Great blast into the past, and thank you for posting.

I might opine that the comments of Thomas might be your interpretation of the matter. There are those of us on the wrench and parts end of the operation that see the situation in somewhat a different perspective... coming from relief that nobody was killed in a mishap but a bit of disappointment of a ship we were kinda familiar with is all pranged up and it's a dollars and sense commitment from insurance company and owner as to whether it will fly again.

And yes, Don and numerous volunteers pitched in to make this happen. And they did a stunning job. CF was appreciative of everyone who stepped forward.

Be mindful of the fact Tom had a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the first incarnation, and what you probably interpreted in his facial expressions was frustration.

Full disclosure... no payroll status with Mr. R. or the then-Florida operation having anything to do with the restoration. There are those old goats who troll this forum who remember that airframe as Tanker 99, or those still who recall her as Yucca Lady. Some of us old farts remember the news of that "Beaver" incident from another perspective entirely differently. That said, I still smile often that she is still with us. In spite of crazy things like nuclear blasts, scrap surplus sales, hard tanker work and a dance down a ravine. Or those early CF years long before Flight Experiences and survival from year to year on walk-in traffic through two airplanes on the road and a director's commitment and vision.

But enough from the old ones in the audience. Some cats have Nine lives and use every one of them to the fullest. That's all I have to say about this B-17.

Crash was 8/23/87.

The people of Pittsburgh saved that aircraft. Others said that it should be parted out or scrapped. There were also some bad words written about the work done in Beaver Falls. Then upon inspection the repairs in question were not done in Beaver Falls. An apology was issued but never a retraction to the media outlet. If it wasn't for the little known shop north of Pittsburgh (Air Heritage), she wouldn't be here today.

HE APPLIED FULL AILERON & RUDDER TO MAINT CONTROL, BUT WAS UNABLE TO STOP ON THE REMAINING RWY. THE ACFT CONTD OFF AN EMBANKMENT AT THE DEP END OF THE RWY & WAS DAMAGED.
