The "log ploy" is not unlike the "goat on the runway" when bouncing a DC-3.
If you look at the video it is very plain to see that it touched the water going too fast. The forward part of hull is in the water resulting in the pivot point on the water being the nose. The resulting "water-loop" is what seaplanes do unless they touch down at the proper speed and deck angle.
