Great news for TIGHAR, as since the photograph has now been disproven, there's more time and headline space for stories about cadaver sniffing puppies:

You know, I can almost remember a time when the National Geographic was a well-respected institution.

Almost.

Fixxed your link. Interesting, in the comments section is a statement that "Showa 10"..the tenth year of the reign of Hirohito which began 25 December 1926, would make the book publish date 1937. Regardles, no airplane and/or no Amelia makes everything else another addition in the list of Amelia speculations.
EDIT
MichaelHaradon, leave a space between the colon and the link address and if you use the preview feature when posting you can test your link before pressing Submit.

I love the photo where the two "Archaeologists" have their feet in the hole they are collecting DNA from! Nope, no contamination here!

Do they just not see how idiotic a photo like that is?

I saw that too and the guy is dead wrong. Even if we accept his premise, throw out the rest of 1926 and start counting from 1927, that would still mean "Showa 10" falls in 1936 and the book was published nearly a year before Earhart disappeared. "Hayward Withers" apparently makes the common mistake of forgetting there is no "Year Zero" in any calendar.

Besides, every online resource (for book and coin collectors and the like) I consulted supports the original contention that "Showa 10" is indeed 1935.

Thanks TBDude, that's why I posted the comment here. I was hoping to get input from folks focused on the subject.
