AnyOne have info on the Spad ? Is it being repaired else where ?

I was told that that Spad is just about repaired, and just needs a new engine. They are looking for the donation of a "gently used, airworthy Lycoming 0-320 E2-D, or near equivalent, with logs (and no prop strikes), and an airworthy McCauley 1A175/ETM8042 prop." The bird could still be flying this year if they get those items.

This was told to me pretty openly, so I guess I can repeat. Coughlin sold it to Owls Head, except for the engine, which is ORA's and will be staying.

You might be thinking, Gee, Owls Head already has the old King Pup, what's up with that? I was told to watch for developments on that front. I did notice that the Owls Head Pup was not on view when I was up there Saturday.

Thanks for the link to the Spartan pics! One of those (the black and orange one) is the ORA C3, the others (the blue and yellows ones) are of another one that resides in Wisconsin. The blue and yellow one has been flying since the 1960's with an engine (I think) from a Stearman, so it doesn't have the long nose that the C3-165 should have. The ORA example, from what I understand, hasn't flown since the mid-80's (someone told me 1986). So it just sits in one of the hangars. I can't imagine that it is a high priority airframe for ORA, as it was simply typical of biplanes of the era and not something with a particular tie to either New York or to ORA other than it being one of the dozens of airframes located and restored by Cole Palen.

In a conversation with one of Cole's pilot/mechanic/characters back in the '70s, he related that aircraft would get one restoration. After that any efforts would be directed to a new replica and when the older ship wore out, off to the museum building for static display. Over the years those statics grew and probably deserve a rebuild. Time and money being the main factors.

That's a really interesting approach. I guess the product of a different era as well. Does explain the huge quantity of statics there. The Spartan is of interest to me since it was built in Tulsa. Would be great to have it back here in Tulsa at the local museum. I would suspect that it will never get an airworthy restotation at ORA as there is really no reason for them to do so. Would be lots cheaper to just buy an airworthy WACO or Stearman than to try to restore that one with its Wright engine. Would love to see it in person someday. Thanks for the video link.
