Not sure what's the thinking behind hanging Sidewinders on a Trojan.

The sidewinders would give it some defensive capability against being shot down by Migs. Also could be used against helicopters. It increase the threat level, or hostile environment that it can perform ops . Maybe even in a hostile environment where there are no fighter jets overhead.

I noticed the turbine engine on the Trojan, I suppose the extra power would be needed if that want use use all the external stores pylons.

The A-10 also carries Sidewinders, meaning someone knows that even CAS types might run into air to air action.

It's a good cheap simple platform if you are working on the missiles, not the airplane

I would be surprised if they used a T-28 during the sidewinder development program.
It was a Navy program and I'd think they would have had Cougarsreadily available at China Lake.

Anyone recognize the wing tanks on the Navy bird? They look like external fuel tanks, but a bit of strange shape, and the bulge underneath looks unique. Pump in the bulge? Perhaps a vent/dump line underneath? Chemical dispenser?

I'd guess chemical dispensers, but based on F-86 various 120-gal externals.

My thought on the pods was perhaps they were some kind of early ECM pod?

The winders could be C models....used on F-8s as radar guided missiles, the AIM-9Cs ended up being used as anti-radiation missiles for use against SAM sites? Not sure about the time frame.....might 've been post Vietnam...

The picture with the AIM-9 is stamped "5-15-62" which likely refers to May 15th, 1962. So before Vietnam got especially heavy.
