Lancaster to fly to Australia

Rumours are gathering that the Lancaster i think the UK rego one is flying to NZ via Oz in 2007 for the film dambusters...

'The UK one' isn't a 'reggo' aircraft as it belongs to and is operated by the RAF as a commemorative aircraft; it's still a military machine: PA474, no civil registration.

Just a few questions to counter the rumors...

Why would you take a Lanc and fly it half way across the globe to Oz...when the Lanc was actually based in England? :confused:

So by having the Lanc in England, you have the correct plane and location...

Well...on the other hand, ya' gotta' ask yourself, "Just how much clout does Peter Jackson have?"
Were it me, I'd try to get the Canadian Lanc to fly to the UK for filming.

They could have multiple reasons for flying it to NZ if true...
Might be reasons:
- The weather is better there. It's expensive to have a film crew sitting around waiting for good weather.
- Low flying is better there because there are less people around. And the landscape of Europe might have changed too much to represent 1943.

On the other hand I hope they will film at RAF Scampton too. I've been there 2 years ago and as far as I know it's still looking a lot like it was during the war. Except for the new control tower and extended runway.
It would spoil the movie if you would be watching and thinking “Hey, that’s not RAF Scampton!?”.

I think youre right here Peter, most likely a film crew dispatched to East Kirby to get some film in the can of a running Lanc in a correct location.

Absolutely zilch, zero chance of the RAF BBMF ever using up all that time and flying hours to fly PA474 to NZ for a film...just not going to happen.

BEaring in mind the logistics of trying to get the CWH Lanc over to the UK became a non-starter, I can't even see the Canadian one making the trip, as pressumably it would have to go west across Canada, and then anti-clockwise around the Pacific rim to get there......and back.

As another issue besides "logistics" -- aren't we, at this point, past the time when such valuable aircraft are exposed to the hazards of open-ocean flying, except perhaps to effect a permanent relocation and then only as a last resort? I kind of hope so. We all know that there is no amount of insurance that could truly compensate for the loss of a flyable Lanc.

Correct.

That reducing over the water exposure time is why I would assume, if hypothetically the Canadian Lanc were to make the trip to NZ, it would have to go the long way anti-clockwise around the Pacific rim, and back the same way. That's a lot of flying and a lot of planning and advance support logistics.

As I said.....no chance.

So...was the Memphis Belle movie the last time we will see large warbirds making the epic journey across the pond? As I recall that went rather well, at least I don't remember hearing about massive troubles, other than the sad loss of one of the French airplanes during filming.

I don't think they will use either the BBMF Lancaster or the Canadian example - flying scenes are probably all going to be CGI anyway. In the article above Peter Jackson confirms 10 full scale, fiberglass replicas are going to be built which I assume will be for ground/taxi shots.

I think it would be great to have a Lanc fly out, and if there is concerns about chewing up flying hours, just leave it down under and avoid the waste of flying hours taking it back up top! smiles

Hi,

I too, think that flying one of the airworthy Lancasters all the way down to Australia would be a monumental undrtaking for either the RAF or the CWH. But, it sure would be nice to see both of them in the air together flying....but that is just wishful thinking on my part.
