I walked down the street to the neighbors garage sale and got this original shot for 10 cents!!! no, they didn't have any others dammit!
This is a view of the famous photo flight of the 361st FG's new P-51Ds lead by Col Tom Christian. But, I've never seen this view before. I think this is the best wartime formation air-to-air I've ever seen!
#1 Col Tom J.J. Christian, #2 1Lt Ben Drew, #3 1Lt Bruce Rowlett & #4 Capt Francis Glanker.

Hmmm... doesn't look like they're ALL new P-51Ds (and I'm guessing Capt. Glanker was just a mite jealous of his buddies)

Ya, they were all blue and every freaking SNJ the Navy ever flew had that stupid GTMO blue-gray/yellow/orange scheme!

Nope. Early D were retrofitied with the fin filet also so don't use that to judge the model of the airplane. A number of Bs also had it put on. The Bs looked a little funny, sorta like a P-47 with a malcolm hood canopy.

...and there were two versions of dorsal fin fillets on K-models, the so called 'straight' and the 'sway-backed' [curved top edge] type;
and it might be of interest to you guys that not only were a number of B/C's retrofitted in the field but also a number at the factory during the production of the last C-10-NT batch at Dallas [FY 44 serials].....

I won't go into differences on canopies (those D's in the photo have the early -2 California type).....

so Jack is absolutely right - don't try to judge on a model by looking at a single detail.

He may have preferred the B/C. Quite a few pilots did.

Martin, doesn't the centre of the 3 D's in the pic. have a different canopy to the outer 2 ? more pointed above the pilot ?
